Voice of Conscience a novel by Behcet Kaya

Author Behcet Kaya draws on his vast knowledge of Turkish and Muslim customs and traditions, captivating his audience from the first chapter. We first meet the Ozcomert family in Atamkoy, Turkey in 1962: Ramzi Sr., his wife, Nermin, their beautiful daughter, Erin, and son, Ramzi Jr. The scene is set for a traditional wedding when Erin is engaged to Turkel with both families' blessing. The elder from the rival Korucu family has decided that he will have Erin marry his grandson. When Ramzi Sr. turns the elder Korucu down, it brings shame to the Korucu clan and soon several of the Ozcomert livestock are slaughtered. Fearing increased violence, the wedding date is moved up.

Ramzi Jr. is awakened in the night by his cousin and aunt and soon learns the horrible truth that will haunt him for the rest of his life - his father, mother, and sister have been murdered in their sleep. Ramzi travels to Istanbul and finds work in construction as he attempts to build a life for himself. Memories of the night his family was murdered continue to disturb him, as does his paranoia that his enemies will find him and kill him as well.

In England, Ramzi is studying for his engineering degree and working as a waiter. He meets Megan, a wealthy, sophisticated American. They fall in love, move to the United States, marry, and begin a family of their own. Ramzi has it all - a beautiful wife, children and a very successful business...however, he can't cast off the nightmare of his past. Not even the love of his wife and daughters, and his place in the business community are enough to keep Ramzi from seeking to quench his thirst for revenge. This desperate need to avenge his murdered family gradually destroys everything he has worked so hard to obtain.

Kaya has crafted an epic story with an intriguing plot filled with plenty of drama, tension and conflict, wonderful character development and crisp dialogue. As well, there are beautiful moments of joy, wonder, and romance. Whether in a Turkish village, London, or the U.S., he puts us right there with vivid sensory descriptions and strong, scene-setting narrative.

Kaya's talent for storytelling is evident on every page and it is easy to forget that Voice of Conscience is his first novel. Frequently, I was shaking my head in shock, laughing at his humor, and moved by a sad passage all in the same chapter. I highly recommend this riveting tale.

Behcet Kaya

Books In Sync Announces Mystery Thriller Novelist Steven Nedelton

Author’s Short Biography:
Steven Nedelton began writing short stories in his teens. He wrote his first novel, ‘Fear Factor’, in the late 90s. ‘Crossroads’ is his new, published, novel. ‘The Raven Affair’, also under contract with Asylett Press, is scheduled to be released by the end of 2009. He is presently working on his fourth novel, ‘Tunnel’, and finishing ‘Fear Factor’.

He lived for several years in Paris, France and London, England and is able to draw from his experiences living abroad to add realistic description of these locales and characters in his novels.

Steven holds a MSME from the PIB (PINY)/NYC and was a P.E. in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He has Roman ancestry like Italians.

Headline: Crossroads by Steven Nedelton

"Four guards and a large Siberian dog surround him. The chase car is still flashing red. A Mongol with a flat yellow face and shovel-like incisors is holding his passport and visa. The guard’s Russian is hard to understand; his English is impossible. “My car stalled, I'm a tourist,” he is explaining in his bad Russian to the Mongol. The guard laughs, shows off his incisors, then pokes him in the chest with his gloved forefinger. “You play poker. You, you–capitalist spy,” he says in his best English."

“My dear, dear, friend,” Sokolov started his missive, and continued with...I am sure that by the time you read my letter you will have already had a few friendly dinners with our mutual acquaintance, Burly. I know he likes to talk a lot and I apologize for his often crude manners. But let us leave him the way he is. We cannot change people, their habits. Both of us know that well. And quite often we have to forgive them their little shortcomings. So, back to the business, as the Americans say.

I believe that you have already expressed an interest in my little venture, at least Burly indicated so in our recent telephone conversation. However, I have an additional little request for you. It may appear a bit odd, but please do try to understand my position. I am quite sure you know that I have never believed in seances and the like. Meaning, I can hardly believe in my own existence, never mind something ‘supernatural.’ Be it as it may, my old mother had several ‘experiences’—how should I word it—‘visual encounters,’ perhaps, with my dead brother. He died in the Great War. You cannot imagine how happy she felt, my poor, dear, old mother. So she asked me—can you imagine?—to get in contact with a reliable medium—I believe that is what they call such people—and have them try to get in touch with my dead brother to find out what he wanted to tell her. I am sure that in a big city like Paris there must be a few of those.

That is why I decided to contact you for help. The problem is, he or she would have to talk to my mother directly—she will not have it any other way—and tell her the details..."

Crossroads Book Review

"Crossroads is an international spy thriller with an intriguing plot that twists and turns thus engaging the interest of the reader till the final page. It contains an array of interesting characters ranging from the bottom of the food chain like Mme Benoit, an excop turned killer for hire Hans Polf to the top Russian Special Operations boss Sergey Sokolov. In this spy game no one is spared, no one is indispensable. It's how each character meets his/her end that makes the plot suspenseful and satisfying as a spy thriller. The plot flits back and forth, from the United States, to Russia and to France giving it an international flair. Steven Nedelton has a flair for details - a good example is how the fallen Volkov stalked Solkolov to have his revenge. Time and time again, Nedelton painstakingly builds up a scene before the violence erupted, giving the plot suspense and visual detail. He has a keen eye for details.
A good read for a lazy day at home."

"Reminiscent of John Le Carre with a dash of Ian Flemming, Steven Nedelton's Crossroads plunges us deep into the complicated and not yet thawed Cold War mindpower experimentations and its dubious dark characters that once inhabited that volatile underworld. Written with an uncanny knack for plot and time-shifting, this 21st century thriller also introduces us to 20 th century CIA Agent David Tallman, the main character who possesses depth, passion and, in the grand tradition of Hemingway at his best, more than his fair share of tragedy and wickedness. An unusually multi-layered and absorbing novel, Crossroads will be and should be read by thriller and spy novel enthusiasts all over the globe." DEAD of KNIGHT-A Jack Staal Mystery

DEAD of KNIGHT
A Jack Staal Mystery

Your next birthday could be murder!

Believing he is a soldier of justice, a misguided young man begins a callous campaign of terror murdering women on their birthdays. Convinced of his righteousness he continues his brutal crusade forcing the citizens of Hanson B.C. to acknowledge a serial killer active in their rural community.

The Mounties always get their man…but not if Jack Staal gets him first!

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police put their Integrated Homicide Investigation Teams into action. Detective Jack Staal and the rest of Hanson PD are invited to support the RCMP. However, Staal, the once elite major-crime investigator reduced to small-town detective is desperate for redemption. He ignores protocol to work a case that is not his to solve.

Told from the perspective of both killer and cop DEAD of KNIGHT is a cat and mouse thriller sure to delight fans of Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta or Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch.

The first review.

Author William R. Potter takes the reader into the heart and soul of his protagonist and into the warped mind of a psychopath. Potter’s first full length novel, Dead of Knight is told from the point-of-view of Detective Jack Staal and from the perspective of a killer who murders women on their birthdays.

Through clever use of back story, we learn that Detective Staal is suffering from post-traumatic stress after a horrific shooting. Unable to shake the horror of that day, Staal has left his position with the Vancouver PD’s homicide squad and has resurrected his career with the police service in a fictional country town called Hanson, British Columbia.

Anxious to work the biggest case of his career, Staal is forced to the outside when the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s Integrated Homicide Teams are assigned to the case. Not one to sit on the sidelines, Staal convinces his colleagues to follow his lead and pursue a serial killer the media has dubbed Birthday Boy.

Believing he is a soldier of justice, a misguided young man has begun a callous campaign of terror. Damian Knight (Birthday Boy) is convinced of his righteousness and continues his brutal crusade of revenge. As his death count mounts, so does Knight’s courage and he soon turns his anger on a fatigued Staal. Staal and Knight play out a cat and mouse thrill ride that culminates with an epic, one-on-one meeting of cop versus killer.

Potter has created an intriguing police procedural with a strong main character, a terrific supporting cast, and a plot with twists, turns, and plenty of red herrings. I have read many books in this genre featuring a main character that is a bullet-proof, womanizing Neanderthal. However, Potter’s Jack Staal takes a pounding, both physically and emotionally. This is one author who isn’t afraid to show his hero breaking down or making mistakes. Potter has penned a captivating tale filled with plenty of tension and conflict, crisp dialogue and an unrelenting pace. He puts us in the story with vivid descriptions and scene-painting narrative.

I highly recommend Dead of Knight-A Jack Staal Mystery. It is sure to delight fans of Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta or Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch.

Books In Sync Recognizes & Honors Multi-Book & True Crime Author Douglas Chandler Graham

Douglas Chandler Graham grew up in rural Virginia close to Lakeside Amusement Park. He worked summers at this park from the age of twelve until he was eighteen when he joined the U.S. Army Air Force. Honorably discharged from the military, he became a street cop in Roanoke, Virginia. Over the years, he has been a bill collector, salesman, and postman. After retiring from the Postal Service, he became a certified private investigator and bodyguard. He has lived in Florida since 2000.

His first book ‘Smoke and Murders’ is a fictionalized story of the murder of the Hodges family as discovered in the small town of Vinton, Virginia, on August 29, 1994. Most of the characters are composites of people known to the author and, except for the murders; most of the situations are made up. Fascinated by the sequence of events as they unfolded, the author could not get the crime off his mind, and over the years, Smoke and Murders evolved.

Books In Sync Honors Douglas Chandler Graham For Service To His Country In The United States Military.

Sequel to Smoke and Murders (“Three Trailers Down”) Is Here As Promised!

Three Trailers Down by Douglas Chandler Graham is the extended story that began in Smoke and Murders.

Although this may be regarded as a sequel it is a complete novel. After the small town of Vinyard is about to settle down after the murders of an entire family, new problems arise to keep the gossip pot boiling.

The story follows the Lieutenant that ran the Vinyard police department and was caught and fired for multiple criminal offenses.

Intrigue, murders, sex and money drive just about all the characters in Three Trailers Down, at least, the more sophisticated ones. The rest take life as they find it.

Douglas Chandler Graham tried to get dozens of organizations to look at the arrest and trial of Earl Bramblett in the five years after his trial while on death row. All were overloaded with other cases they were working, which should give some indication of justice in America, or the lack thereof. High profile cases give the impression every fact is checked and all evidence is examined. In the dark courtrooms of America “justice” is whatever the court determines, the law be damned. A prime example of this is on the ten year old website allamosa.com.

There was no justice in that trial and it cost Bramblett his life.

A Captivating Glimpse Into a Remarkable Life-Battling The Blessings

Battling the Blessings is author Terry Fulgham's life story which spans over fifty years, reflecting on his childhood, the teen years, and into his adulthood. Fulgham changed the names of the characters, including his own, to protect the innocent.

We meet Reggie Manchester-Pallor as a nine-year-old in 1956. Reggie lived in Flint, Michigan with his grandparents, who he lovingly referred to as "Big Mama" and "Papa Manchester." The Manchester house was a caring, respectful, and disciplined Christian home. Growing up then was different than it is today; children only spoke to adults when they were spoken to. If a kid stepped out of line, they were spanked. Reggie saw his share of spankings, or whippings, as he called them. Reggie was very close to his grandparents and, as his father was not around; Papa Manchester was his only male influence.

The passing of Papa Manchester left a profound emptiness in 10-year-old Reggie's life, leaving him with a feeling of helplessness. A few months after the loss of his grandfather, Reggie met Jesse "Pancake" Stoner. Reggie was small for his age and a favorite target of bullies. Pancake was one of the biggest kids in school. With Pancake around, no one bothered Reggie. Pancake and Reggie grew to be as close as brothers, and together were both respected and feared in their neighborhood. At age 13, Reggie, Pancake and their friends began drinking wine, smoking, and later, stealing cars.

Reggie was the only one of his friends to graduate from high school. In the last few years of school, he held numerous jobs where he was known as a hard and dedicated worker. This weekday life differed greatly from his weekends, as he continued to love the street life. Drinking alcohol and cough syrup (for a codeine high), popping pills, fighting, stealing, and chasing girls filled his off work hours. Big Mama doubted Reggie would see his 21st birthday if he didn't stop his street life.

The failure of his second marriage and the death of a close friend had Reggie drinking more than ever and deeper into drugs and his life of crime. It took losing a fight to a younger man, being severely beaten, and his mother's desperate pleading for him to straighten out his life to get Reggie to take his sobriety seriously and pray, "Lord, stop me from drinking."

Much more than a story of addiction, Battling the Blessings is a snapshot of American history. Fulgham treats us with his memories of growing up in the 50's and 60's, using the slang and lingo of that time in his realistic dialogue. He adds the music, clothes, hairstyles, and vehicles of the day and tells his riveting story with his own unique style to take us back to that turbulent time.

Battling The Blessings isn't simply a kid-gets-hooked-on-booze-and-drugs-and-turns-his-life-around story. It is an unflinching and inspiring telling of a man's struggle with himself and his demons. Fulgham doesn't make excuses for his actions; he takes full responsibility. Reggie isn't a bad guy-he is a smart, compassionate person who just made many bad choices. I found myself cheering for him, hoping that he would one day leave the street life behind and make himself and his family proud.

This is Fulgham's first book. However, he writes with the skill of a seasoned author. He knows how to spin a story in a way that will affect and captivate his reader. Often, I was laughing at his humour, shaking my head in shock, and misting up at a sad passage all in the same chapter. I highly recommend this entertaining glimpse into a remarkable life.

The Saga of Peter the Woodsman by A. Hansley Jr

The Saga of Peter the Woodsman by A. Hansley Jr. is a classic tale of myth and magic, sword and sorcery. We first meet siblings Alex and Wes in modern times, taking the bus home from school. When a strange hooded figure boards and leads the bus in the wrong direction, they immediately jump off. Lost and cold in dark woods, they seek shelter from a sudden intense storm. At the only cottage they find, an old man takes them in and begins telling an incredible epic story that lasts all night and takes them into another world.

Peter is a simple woodsman, hard-working like his father and grandfather before him. One day while walking with his mule, Peter meets a spirit named Dualla. The spirit brings Peter to Helicon, the mount of light. Peter realizes that in Helicon, his mule becomes a mighty stallion, and his axe radiates with magic as though filled with pure energy. Peter, too, is transformed. He meets Calliope, muse of inspiration, and her spirit guards. Calliope welcomes Peter, but calls him Pendragon.

A wise and powerful wizard named Mystagog tells Peter why the spirits have given him total power and the title of Pendragon the Champion. In return, Peter is asked to join their fight against the forces of evil. The dark forces are lead by Lord Evil the First, and his servant wizard, Myrmadon.

Many battles over many centuries ensue as Peter repeatedly answers the call to serve and defend Helicon as its champion. Lord Evil's capacity for cruelty seems endless. Evil is stopped by Peter but is not defeated, as Evil's campaign to destroy him, along with the nine sister muses, and Helicon rages for millennia.

Author A. Hansley Jr. has written a captivating tale with an intriguing plot filled with plenty of tension and conflict, wonderful character development, crisp dialogue and an unrelenting pace. He puts us right there, too, with vivid sensory descriptions and strong, scene-setting narrative.

Will Peter defeat Lord Evil at long last and end Evil's reign-of-terror and destruction? Or will the Woodsman ultimately fail the people of Helicon? And what part do Alex and Wes play in the final battle of good versus evil? You'll have to read it to find out.

Geared to the 8-14 set, The Saga of Peter the Woodsman will be loved by young readers. A. Hansley Jr.'s writing talent and vast knowledge and use of Greek mythology will also keep even the most sophisticated adult reader enthralled.

Peace in the Storm by Deirdre Kelley

Peace in the Storm by author Deirdre Kelley tells the often traumatic story of divorce from a drug addicted and abusive spouse. We meet Amy Alexander as she walks away from the courthouse and the battle to save her marriage. She is free of the violence and fear of her husband, Brandon. However she can't help worrying about her future and whether she is strong enough to make it on her own and take care of her two sons.

Over the next several chapters we learn about how Amy's children deal with an absent father and their memories of how Brandon hurt their mother mentally and physically. Fifteen-year-old Marshall seems to be the perfect son and student; hard working, mature, understanding, a good Christian teen. He steps into his new role as man of the house and is glad his mother no longer has to endure the bruises and the fighting. Like most seven-year-olds, Sean loves video games and playing with his friends. He struggles with the belief that since his father doesn't visit, and yelled at him for no reason, that his father must hate him.

Peace in the Storm is well written with good character development and believable dialogue. Deirdre Kelley does a good job showing the stress and fear involved when dealing with a violent, unpredictable ex-husband. She also draws a clear picture of the joy of a new beginning, of rebuilding and reaching out to help others. Throughout her struggles, Amy discovers a great strength in prayer and the new friends she makes along the way. Just when you think the Alexander family will be okay, Brandon begins harassing and threatening the family for money to support his and his girlfriend's drug habit, culminating with Sean's disappearance one day after school.

Peace in the Storm is a wonderful work of Christian fiction. I understand that in difficult times, many people lean on their faith for direction. However, I occasionally felt the religious passages pulled me from this otherwise interesting story. I recommend Peace in the Storm to those who enjoy stories of faith-inspired strength and survival. I hope to read more from Deirdre Kelley.

Author’s Bio: Sylvia Dickey Smith’s creative writing focuses on the strengths and weaknesses of middle-aged and older women finding their way and developing a strong identity of their own. Her stories delve into social issues and often point out the tragedies that pious religion and bigotry can wrack on our society. She also allows that there can be good even in the people who are perceived as being narrow-minded zealots.

Her best-selling debut novel, Dance on His Grave, won writing contests before it even reached publication. In it, her protagonist Sidra Smart is no young babe dashing about in a flashy car and solving mysteries between manicures. She's the fifty year old ex-wife of a preacher who left him and his guilt-and-fear-based religion to find herself. Now, with the death of her brother she's inherited a detective agency called the Third Eye and that puts her in the position of working as a private investigator. Smith’s fiction embraces the possibility of help from spirits beyond this world without hitting the skeptical reader over the head with it. She skillfully employs humor to delight her readers and create memorable characters. View all of the author's books.

Smith brings Southeast Texas to life spotlighting the marvelous melting pot of Cajun, Creole, Scots-Irish, African-American, and Dutch descendants who live and work there today. Book Three In The Sidra Smart Series:

Sidra Smart's search for an elusive schooner stirs up ruthless smugglers and the spirits of Privateer Jean Lafitte and Pirate Queen Mary Anne Radcliff. Newly licensed private investigator Sidra Smart reluctantly takes on the pro-bono case of Boo Murphy, a poor, countrified woman accused of murder. When Boo tells her tale of stumbling on the Hotspur, half-buried in a Texas swamp, everyone is convinced she's found treasure worth millions. As Sidra searches for both the schooner and evidence to clear her client, she battles an unknown enemy, and soon discovers they know their business much better than she knows hers. After several close calls, not only does Sid question her own abilities, she discovers her trusted mentor George Léger is involved in illegal activities that threatens not only their friendship, but also their lives. Even Slider, her half-paranoid, half Chesapeake Bay retriever battles demons from his past as the investigation takes Sidra back to familiar small town territory. Complicated family histories dating back centuries and feuding family relationships muddy the clues and the truth seems as elusive as the spectral schooner. When all seems lost, eighteenth century spirits of infamous Jean Lafitte and voluptuous, swashbuckling pirate-queen Mary Anne Radcliff show up to offer Sid assistance.

Across Beatty's Bridge, the familiar Greek revival mansion along the Black River now held a crime scene beyond anyone's worst nightmare. A gruesome mess with blood tracked everywhere, and key evidence already obliterated. With the SBI seriously shorthanded Agent Hunter had the daunting task of piecing everything together to find the killer. She questioned a strange assortment of suspects and soon discovered the seemingly harmless victim had numerous enemies. Which one committed the heinous crime? Inching closer to the truth, she dodged increasing danger around every curve as the killer tried to stop her investigation. Even more troubling than the physical attacks, this case brought back Logan's night terrors as she battled Hell Swamp's demons from the past.

Someone Stop This Merry-Go-Round: An Alcoholic Family in Crisis

Many of us have had a spouse or family member arrive home after a few too many drinks. Some of us have needed to make up excuses for a loved one's occasional over-drinking. Imagine if this was a daily occurrence. Waiting, worrying, and watching the clock, wondering when, and in what state, a spouse would finally come home, and then trying to hide it all from neighbors, family and the children.

For seventeen years, this was author Alberta H. Sequeira's existence every day as she dealt with her husband's alcoholism. She loved mild-mannered Richard Lopes and witnessed how alcohol changed him from a loving family man with a successful business to a careless, angry, abusive drunk.

Written like dramatic fiction, Someone Stop This Merry-Go-Round: An Alcoholic Family in Crisis is a fast paced, tension-filled account of a woman's tireless effort to keep her family together, her two children safe and to protect her own mental and physical well being. Sequeira gives an honest telling of life married to an alcoholic-a life filled with sadness, fear, pain and despair.

Sequeira didn't believe in divorce and was too proud to seek help from her parents, deciding to go it alone. Several times it seemed her husband was ready to quit his devastating lifestyle and commit fully to being a good partner and devoted father, only to have him fall back to bingeing and his alcoholic ways. This rollercoaster life took its toll on Sequeira, plaguing her with frequent panic attacks and eventually bringing her to the brink of a total breakdown.

Through arguments, unpaid bills, violent rage, emotional abuse and neglect, Sequeira kept hope that her husband would eventually realize he had a problem, and seek treatment. He never did...always believing he was just having a few drinks with his buddies after a hard day's work. Sequeira takes her share of the blame for all the times she could have kicked him out, demanded he got help, or pressed charges for the abuse. I found myself cheering for her, hoping that in the end Mr. Lopes would choose to save his marriage and his family. Despite being divorced from Mr. Lopes, Sequeira suffered greatly when he succumbed in 1985 to the damage done to his body from a lifetime of drinking.

Alberta H. Sequeira is a talented writer. She shows great courage not only in surviving, but in her willingness to return to these experiences when she wrote this memoir. I believe this book could be of great help to alcoholics, their families and even counselors. I highly recommend Someone Stop This Merry-Go-Round: An Alcoholic Family in Crisis and I look forward to the follow-up coming soon. The sequel, Please, God, Not Two-This Killer Called Alcoholism details how Sequeira's daughter, Lori Cahill, followed the same path as her father.

Affordable, Professional Editing and Proofreading

You have spent months perhaps years writing your book. The opening has a great hook. The characters are fresh and exciting. The dialogue is crisp and the plot has all the twists and turns needed to keep the reader gripped. The ending ties up all those loose ends and will have readers begging for more!

But are you certain about spelling, punctuation, typographical, and grammatical errors? How about those nagging unclear and inconsistent paragraphs? You've spent too much time working on your manuscript to just take your chances. I recommend a professional editing and proof-reading service before you send your book out to agents and or publishers.

A professional editor will proofread your work for: spelling, punctuation, typographical, and grammatical errors. A professional will edit your work for unclear and inconsistent prose; including point of view and time line issues; confusing dialogue, word usage, and repetition; making corrections and suggestions, ensuring clarity, without altering your unique style.

Spell check software is not a replacement for a proof reader!

It is difficult to edit one's own work; and typographical, punctuation, and formatting errors are easily missed.

Editors and agents look for manuscripts as close to publish-ready as possible and will ignore submissions plagued with mistakes. Self-published works containing errors appear unfinished and will leave your readers with a less than favorable impression.

Don’t let this happen to you! Editing is affordable and will have your manuscript ready for the world!

Don't rely on friends and family to tell if your project is ready.

Visit Shamrock Editing for affordable editing proof reading service today!

On the Verge of Madness by author George Wilhite

On the Verge of Madness by author George Wilhite is like a perfectly cooked steak...dark on the outside and a little bloody in the middle. This collection of fiction features eight very different stories, each showcasing Wilhite's considerable talent and vast knowledge of the horror genre. His work has already drawn comparison to Poe and Lovecraft. But let me tell you, Wilhite's own twisted style and warped voice is evident on every page.

The opening novella, Victor Chaldean and the Portal is worth the price of admission. Victor is desperate to solve the disappearance of his wife. After he begins to have strange visions, he seeks help from a psychologist studying the paranormal. An experimental drug takes Victor into a fractured realm, into a place trapped between life and death where he struggles to find his lost wife and each day is more convinced he is insane.

Next up is Murmurers. I settled in for a great read as Wilhite hooked me quickly with a story of an Earth all but stripped of human life. A former combat soldier and a teenage girl find a special bond after he saves her life. To survive they must trust each other and keep moving to avoid the mysterious Murmurers. The only problem for me was how quickly this one ended.

In Checks and Balances, alcoholic John breezes through the first of the twelve steps to recovery. It is step Eight - making amends with those he has hurt - with which he struggles the most. If only he could make a trade, a deal, to skip this step. But who or what would make such a bargain?

Lars kills for money. He is very good at what he does. When it comes to clothes, only the very best will do for Lars. In The Gangster's New Clothes, Wilhite attempts a short in the style of the old Twilight Zone TV show. The result is a fun, frightening tale. A second after Lars puts on his handmade suit, he finds himself facing his checkered past and, step by step, is pushed closer to insanity.

Wilhite then gives us two amazing examples of the old adage: less is more. A Plea From the Cradle and Cast of Characters are "flash fiction" at its finest. Not a word is wasted - both of these tales will quickly put a shiver up your spine if not a smile on your face.

All good things must end, and I believe Wilhite saved the best for last. A Tale of Two Moons is a Werewolf classic and could possibly explain the origin of these legendary monsters.

Masque Profane takes us beyond the "Verge of Madness," delving straight into full blown insanity. Rhonda and Jeff are happy newlyweds...or are they? Rhonda becomes obsessed with the fact that Jeff has never spent a Halloween night with her in their time together. This fixation takes Rhonda to the gathering place of a strange ritual one Halloween night. Her experience there, and later the birth of her child would one day take her to madness and a horrific murder.

In all eight of these stories, whether novella or short, the author's skill at character development, crisp dialogue and page turning suspense is forefront. He captivates the reader with intriguing characters and fine plotting without the pointless brutal violence and gratuitous sex that has become so common in horror today. I highly recommend On the Verge of Madness and I look forward to the follow up, Silhouette of Darkness. I doubt that it will be long before a major publisher signs Wilhite, as his work deserves to be on shelves next to the likes of Peter Straub and Thomas F. Monteleone.

The Stormy Side of Theodocia by Theodocia McLean

In The Stormy Side of Theodocia, author Theodocia McLean describes the first twenty-three years of her life with vivid detail and uncompromising honesty.

We first meet this well-mannered young animal lover as a two-year-old in 1956. She is twice adopted and known as Theo, as her full name is not revealed to her until she is sixteen. She is an average child with normal problems like bedwetting and carsickness. She enjoys everything that girls her age enjoy like dolls and kittens and dressing up.

McLean draws you in with her exceptional descriptive skill. You feel like you are one of her friends playing with her in the playhouse, riding bikes and taking turns on the swing. The warm memories bring fond thoughts of your own childhood. Then the scene hits hard and deep as pre-teen Theo is the victim of sexual assault by an older neighbor boy.

This isn't the only instance of this type of abuse. It happens repeatedly, leaving the reader sad, disturbed and even angry. Where are the parents, teachers, the church, and other adults? None come to Theo's aid. There are many traumas-some by others and some by cruel fate. All leave a lasting scar.

Instead she is shipped off to a private school where blue-eyed children were blatantly favored over brown-eyed children like her. Where children are punished for feeling sick and the punishment is a day confined to bed with nothing more than buttered crackers to eat.

This is more than a retelling of abuse and neglect. This is an inspirational story of unimaginable perseverance. Many of us, if forced to experience these terrible traumas at such a young age, might find escape as an adult in alcohol or drugs or give up entirely.

Not Theodocia McLean. She shows a colossal level of courage and determination to survive and to flourish. She marries the love of her life and soon has a son. Marriage and motherhood bring a measure of stability and love to her life that she had not known.

She begins to worry about the loss of sizeable chunks of time in her day. In the last few pages, the family is packed and moving again and we are left to wonder if the time lapses and interrupted concentration are the first symptoms of future problems caused by the many traumas.

In closing, McLean tells about a diagnosis of Bi-Polar Disorder and a later diagnosis of DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder previously known as Multiple Personality Disorder). The tone is set for the upcoming Stormy Journey; a sequel featuring the network of personalities that live inside her.

The strength needed to write her story, reliving each painful moment, is extraordinary. Hard to put down and impossible to forget, I highly recommend that you read The Stormy Side of Theodocia.

Featured Book: Juckets and Swamp Yankees by Joyce Walsh

Book One and Two in ‘The Pittsley County Chronicles-Trilogy’

In Juckets, the story begins with the disappearance of the little Bradburn girl the day before a blizzard. The entire town turns out to search for her, but what they do not know (and will not know until the following Spring) is that she was brutally murdered. Psychology professor, Julia Arnault, discovers the body in Pittsley Woods. As she pursues the investigation, she begins to fear that the man she is in love with may be a serial killer. Meanwhile, veterinarian Adam Sabeski leads Julia into a Deliverance-like world of backwoods New England to find both evil and humanity in unexpected ways.

Swamp Yankees, the sequel to Juckets, is the second volume of The Pittsley Chronicles-the fictional New England setting comparable to Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County. While Adam Sabeski is engaged in preventing his Swamp Yankee friend, Cutter, from seceding from the rural town of Pittsley and bringing the entire government down on his head, psychologist Julia Arnault is trying to solve a 20-year-old murder. Desperate to help her suicidal patient, Julia steps outside the boundaries of her office to investigate her patient's history, thereby defying her supervisor, risking her job, clashing with Adam, and jeopardizing her own life.
